The word gynecomastia is a medical term that has its roots in the Greek word gynaikómasthos, which means “resemblance to women’s breasts.”

Unfortunately, this is a very common problem affecting 40% to 60% of the male population. The root of the problem may be found in drugs, medications, or medical problems, however most cases are untreatable. This condition may affect one or both breasts and displays varying degrees of severity. Breast growth in a man can be very embarrassing and can cause loss of self-confidence. Luckily, it is possible to fix this problem through a reliable surgical operation.

Getting ready for a gynecomastia treatment

It is usually necessary to consult an endocrinologist before the surgery in order to ensure that the gynecomastia is not related to a secondary hormonal problem that may be treated. Your family doctor, a physician in a community clinic or we may refer you to an endocrinologist. During the consultation, we will examine your thorax and we will decide which surgical technique suits your needs according to your health condition. Gynecomastia may present several degrees of severity. For this reason, the surgical technique must adapt to the anatomy of each patient.

If the skin is in good shape and the gynecomastia is mild to moderate, the correction may be performed through simple liposuction or a combination of liposuction and surgical excision by carrying out a small incision on the nipple. If the patient displays excess skin and the nipple is situated at the base of the breast, the exceeding skin must be removed in order to obtain a satisfactory surgical result.

Gynecomastia: Surgery

This day surgery lasts from one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. After the surgery, a dressing is placed on your thorax for support, and you must wear a compression garment. Depending on the type of surgery, small drainage pipes may be placed on the thorax.

Recovery after a gynecomastia

This surgery causes moderate pain that is easily controlled with prescribed medications. Your thorax will be swollen and there will be some slight pain during the first two days. The dressing must be kept dry and intact for the first post operatory consultation, one week after the surgery. If drainage pipes were placed on the thorax, they will likely be removed during this consultation. Following the surgery, you must wear the compression garment day and night for three weeks and three additional weeks during the day. The other postoperative consultations are generally scheduled three weeks, three months and one year after the surgery. In the first consultation three weeks after the surgery, the dressings will be removed and you must start massaging the scars. Intense physical activity should be avoided during the first six weeks. If your work does not require any physical activity you may return within a few days. It is possible that the swelling lingers for some time after the surgery. The final result will be apparent two or three months after the surgery, but it is possible that the scars continue to display some redness for six to twelve months.
